If you can hear your subwoofer - it's too loud.

My experiment with subs didn't work out for a number of reasons. But I am wondering since subs can be placed anywhere, is a good 3 way speaker more limited because there isn't the same flexibility?

I've gotten spoiled by subs.   Can't listen without them.   Even on my full range floorstanders.
Two is better.  Helps with subtle spatial cues and dimensionality.

Absolutely.  Placement of them to deal with room modes is essential for great sound.  You can't just park them and expect miracles.  When properly deployed subs make music seem more effortless.

Definitely 2 is better than 1. Also, the traditional placement method of sticking them in a corner is wrong, to my ears. Pull them away from the wall and get them up off the ground a bit. You will have to turn them up some, but they sound faster and cleaner that way.

Years ago ASC Tube Trap recommended to place your sub off the floor. 22% of room height. Well buckaroos works extremely well. I use Rythmic Subs. Two. Not placed in corner. Set up in line with front of main speakers on the inside, about 8' apart.  Sounds terrific.
When you set them up use one sub to dial it in.

I set up the room in the following manner:

Divide the length of the room into sevenths

Divide the width of the room by fifths

Place speakers at intersection points, trying different locations until the best one is found.

Tweak toe-in and final placement

Multiple subwoofers with a pair in the back anti-phase at very low volume

What were the reasons?

1) I really don't have enough room in my open floor plan living room for those sized subs. They fit between the speakers and rack and require me to access every thing from behind and there's not much room back there
2) I hurt my back lifting one and it took a couple of months to recover
3) I would need more power cords and cables
4) Low bass response isn't all that important to me.I don't dismiss whatever improvement they might provide
5) I had one sub go out and the preamp went out at the same time. I have no idea if one failure caused the other or vice versa or if they were completely independent of each other and coincidental. Brian at Rythmik took care of the repairs and in a very speedy and professional manner
6) if I ever got a dedicated listening room, I would be much more open to placements, extra cables etc.
